Wednesday's Example of Domestic Bliss

We've graduated our darling Cooper out of his safety crate while we are absent during the day. The very first day he did AWESOME! I think he understood that freedom is best repaid with good behaviour. Bless his heart he earned another day.

He's been doing really well or rather we have been doing really well at keeping things out of doggy danger. For 3 weeks he's been lounging on the couch without reprimand, watching cartoons and terrorizing the cat without consequences.

We got comfortable and we started to slip in our diligence. I can't list everything that's gone the way of the canine crusher but I can say that I now own shares in a slipper company from China among others.

This week we doubled our efforts to keep the house doggy proofed and have lost only this...

He started with Appetizers yesterday, so today I hid all the Entree books. Gratitude that he didn't start with dessert, if he's like the rest of the house there would have been no stopping him!

Find a reason to smile today, Share your smile, your hope and GRATITUDE

Lets Talk...About My Kitchen

Welcome to my kitchen!

Welcome to the very heart of our home. This is where it all happens, the arguing, the laughing, the cooking, dancing, negotiations. It is where people come for comforting hugs, sound advise, great food, good wine, and fun times. This room and this picture tell an awful lot about our lives.

Live well, Laugh often, Love much Those are the words on the bulkhead - the family mantra.

The tiny sign just above the sink says "Families are Forever" I keep it there as a reminder to the person mad as heck at the rest of the clan for making such a damn mess that we're not going anywhere.

You may notice the knobs are missing from the stove. That's us too. 3 dozen kids have been raised in this kitchen and not one managed to turn on the gas not even accidentally. Nope it took a curious cat a few weeks back to begin filling the house with gas. Now we keep the knobs in the drawer beside the stove.

On the right, that is my beloved dishwasher. It has been through the war in our home, a little battered and shaky but we talk nice to it and it keeps performing.

In the corner is my favourite small appliance - my Kitchen-aid mixer; sturdy, reliable and dependable. Next to it sits my not so favourite appliance, our  fancy shmancy new toaster that sometimes toasts bread, usually burns bagels, refuses to cooperate without being plugged in and ignores the lift toast request on a regular basis. I should throw it out the window but I'm determined to work through the growing pains to a place of toasted understanding.

The sign on the wall beside the toaster is "A Recipe for a Happy Marriage" it has been hanging in my kitchen for 20 years and hasn't failed to produce great results year after year.

Difficult to see is the monstrosity hanging on the window. It's a little bit Martha Stewart, a little bit Hannibal Lecter. Its a wire hanging vase of sorts with everything but flowers hanging in the vials. There is a shoe shaped cookie cutter and a butterfly one. At the top is a stuffed bumblebee gifted to me by KJ many years ago. There are also 6 years worth of Thanksgiving & Christmas Turkey wishbones drying in the sun. We are saving them up for a really big wish, so far we haven't had to make a really big wish, I'm hoping we never have to.

Also in the window ledge are Michael's tea timer and a little Mexican Lego Man with a poncho and maracas. One day we are going to take him back to his homeland.

On the ceiling are memories of grape juice and hot sauce. The hot sauce was me the grape juice I have never gotten a clear answer about. Every time I bring it up the kids bust into laughter so hard they can't speak.

We keep butter on the counter because I detest holes in my toast.

Some things you can't see in this picture are the calendar and the telephone and the I give blood sticker stuck on the wall. You might not be able to read that the rooster says "fish tacos" although it usually say 'Kate is a Butt' if we forget to hide the chalk from E-man. There is a candle buring on the table because we did have fish tacos for diner. You don't see the ever present broom tucked behind out industrial size garbage can or the leaning tower of cookbooks that don't fit in the cupboard. The fridge is magnet free because magnets don't stick to stainless steel...but fingerprints do! Everyday I ask myself "what were you thinking?"

The other thing I should probably mention about our kitchen is that it NEVER looks like this! I hid the wine bottle, put the recylcing out to the garage and I swept the floor. Oh I suppose it does somewhere under the dishes, empty cereal boxes and toast crumbs look like this, but we rarely see it. Then every once in a while I loose my patience and do a kitchen teardown. This usually has the effect of terrifying the kids into cleaning up after themselves for a few days.

Gratitude courtesy of Michael today who is very grateful that he is still walking upright after asking if I was going to do the same thing to our bathroom

Today is Let's Talk Day (Bell's Mental Health Awareness Campaign) - I hope you enjoyed my kitchen, there is less hidden in there then the post I'm working on. Talk about Mental Health.

Gratitude, Hope and Smiles are meant to be shared.

Wednesday's Example of Domestic Bliss

First of all, I Stopped numbering Wednesday's Bliss posts, for a couple of reasons...1) I lost track 2) It highlights how infrequently I get that post up and 3) Is anyone else keeping track?

Every year I haul the cardboard banana boxes and dollarstore banker boxes out of the basement and we decorate for the holidays. Every year I struggle to identify the correct cardboard cartons, sometimes I bring up Michael's 'Box o Bachleorhood' in error or the 'carton of crap' that used to be the toddler craft box. My basement is a mecca of corrugated surprises. So this year when it came time to pack up Christmas I decided that I would try my hand at Martha Stewart-esk organization.

I went to the store, I bought some fabulous bins, I packed up Christmas and here they are...

Sitting in the livingroom right were I packed them up. If I take them downstairs they are going to be the beauty queen at the ogre's banquet. That's assuming I can find them a place to live in  boxboard haven.

Advance gratitude today for my lovely husband and his patient diligence this coming weekend, as we sift through the sea of boxes, bringing order and organization to the storage quarters in the basement.

Gratitude, Hope and Smiles are yours to share.

Wednesday's Example of Domestic Bliss

Go ahead tell me this bowl of candy isn't for Mike and I. It has our initials all over it!

Much gratitude to our Lego man for all of his hard work and cuteness to collect such a fabulous treat for Mom and Dad. I'll put in a good word with Santa for you.

Spend some moment everyday in reflection of gratitude and happiness. Even if the time found is standing in line for coffee...use is wisely.

Wednesday's Example of Domestic Bliss

Halloween is this weekend and every year I join the hoards of people who spooky up their homes in honour of the festivities. I adorn my porch with severed limbs and rats, I hang spider webs and ghosts. In an attempt to validate all of those dollars spent on design school, I also bring the horror inside and spooky up the house a little too.

I put together a little display on the dining room table this year. It was cute but didn't really achieve the horror I was going for.

Gratitude to the person you added the finishing touch to my display.

This is the real horror in our home...nomadic piles of junk!

Wait until you see what I can achieve at Christmas.

Wednesday's Example of Domestic Bliss

When you have children you quickly learn that nothing is really 'YOURS' anymore. They will help themselves to your favourite cereal, pilfer your earrings, scam hair bobbles, squander your tools. You will never, ever again be able to say "here, use my pen." You will never have another pen at your disposal, the best you will be able to offer is a crayon (half of a green one actually.) All my phone notes are written in green crayon on the backs of hydro bills.

Eventually you will learn to accept this loss of personal possession and teach your kids that some things are sacred. They will learn that Mom's dark chocolate, liquor cabinet and sock drawer are not public domain. You can teach this, I promise, and when that day comes, and your children learn that not everything is fair game, you will breath a sigh of autonomy.

Then you let your guard down, and the cat will lick all the jam off your toast when you turn your back

Gratitude today for the calories now available for lunch.

Spend some moment everyday in reflection of gratitude and happiness. Even if the time found is standing in line for coffee...use is wisely.

Wednesday's Example of Domestic Bliss

I'm home this morning. It's still another few days before I make the official move to full-time advisor's assistant and my new office.

Being home revives so many great memories of when I was home all day - everyday, my SAHM years all 13 of them.

This morning I am baking cakes and planning festivities, I'm catching up with friends and filling backpacks with food drive donations. I'm solving problems, washing dishes, folding laundry, answering the phone, finding bobby pins, rescuing shoes and feeding the pets.

One thing I have discovered that I am not doing is drinking coffee. Not because I don't want to...clearly I do, I've made 2 pots already. Somewhere however, between making the coffee and drinking the coffee, I get sidelined by thawing turkey, matching socks or sending the dog out to pee.

Maybe subconsciously I just want to smell the coffee? An memory triggering olfactory sense that reminds me of why I loved those stay @ home years so much!

Gratitude today that unlike the coffee shop I don't have to dump the pot after 20 minutes and gratitude that thankfully that aged coffee that actually gets to my cup will grow cold before I drink it all. No body needs a admin assistant fueled for the afternoon by 2 full pots of coffee!

Spend some moment everyday in reflection of gratitude and happiness. Even if the time found is standing in line for coffee...use is wisely.

Wednesdays Example of Domestic Bliss #12

The days of summer have officially begun! School is out, the chaos has subsided and the peace of a warm summer breeze is settling over our lives...

My favourite view today

...and our front porch.

Gratitude today for children... free to play, husbands... free to ride, teenagers... free to do whatever it is that teenagers do and for a Mom... free to appreciate it.

Spend some moment everyday in reflection of gratitude and happiness. Even if the time found is standing in line for coffee...use is wisely.

Wednesday's Example of Domestic Bliss #10

Remember when a jellybean was a jellybean? Before the popcorn and watermelon flavours of JellyBelly came on the scene? Long before Hogwarts' inspired barf and bat dropping flavours were all the rage? Way Back when a jellybean was a gelatin gumdrop candy covered in coloured sugar and coated in confectioners wax? Things were simple then....when green tasted like green, yellow like lemon, orange like a can of soda, and purple tasted like a crayon, those were the days!

Back when a jellybean was a jellybean!

Lula brought home a box of old school jellybeans this week and we've been grazing on them. Not surprisingly red was the first to vanish followed by green which is almost wiped out. I prefer the pink and orange ones myself. Evidently the age old issue of finding someone to eat the black ones remains a problem even in today's modern world.

Gratitude today for the good ole' days and kids who are amazed with "retro" candy. (this isn't helping me feel younger)

Wednesday's Example of Domestic Bliss #9

A lot goes on in our house on a day to day basis. Little surprises me; snowballs in the freezer, laptops on the bathroom counter, shoe boxes filled with rocks.

Every once in a while something stops me cold...Like a crime scene...

Exhibit #1

Exhibit #2

Gratitude today that I know the evidence is man-made or rather kid-made.

The teenagers who live in an frequent our home are 'creating' zombie blood. It's the first phase in the creative process, I'm told that I can expect our home and yard to host the filming of a Zombie movie this summer. With any luck they will be bringing in a housekeeping crew to assist with production!

Wednesday's Example of Domestic Bliss #8

A mad hunt for the elusive yesterday. Scotch Tape! I wonder if I'm the only one????

I buy Scotch tape in packs of 3, always with the 'bonus' roll if I can find it. (Can't beat a bonus right?) At Christmas I buy 3 or 4 packages. When a birthday approaches, I buy another roll or two just to make sure we have tape on hand. I must have 40 rolls of the sticky staple in the house... I just can't find a single one!

I have no clue what we use it on, we wrap in gift bags, I never see anything held together with transparent stickiness. My kids need it all the time but never for a decipherable reason. Everytime I hear "where's the tape?" a prickle runs up my back climaxing in a dull pain at the base of my skull and I dread the next 45 minutes. It's always imperative and never found.

My domestic Bliss today is actually found away from home, at my office. We don't have a single use for scotch tape in financial services but I've put a roll in my desk. This way, when someone at home asks "where's the tape?" I always know where a roll exists!

Wednesday's Example of Domestic Bliss #7

Today a Danish story...

We were holding a bake sale at work on Monday to raise money for local children's charities. Homemade Danish and Puff Pastry doughs are among my favourite stress busting activities. Having more than adequate stress to release an excuse to bust some was very welcome.

So I took the time over the weekend for to make some Danish for the bake sale. I mixed and rolled and folded and rolled and folded and rolled and folded and rolled and folded. I rolled and twisted and waited and baked and glazed. I had fun, I had helpers, I had less stress.

Then I proudly took my treasures in for the bake sale...

and they put them with the store bought cookies.

Wednesday's Example of Domestic Bliss #6

I worked from home yesterday. A nice treat. I thought it would be nice to treat my family too. I decided to whip up a batch of chocolate chip cookies between calls, emails and letters.

When I went to the cupboard for the star ingredient here is what I found...

Gratitude to my children today for saving my waistline.

Wednesday's Example of Domestic Bliss #5

This is a healthy plant in our home.

White roses and it's less healthy twin, Pink roses, have lived with us for 2 weeks. They came to us healthy, green, vibrant and flourishing. I followed the tag; watered moderately, exposed to full sun and a balmy 22 degrees C. I did everything right and they died. They died before it got warm enough for me to put them outside for mother nature to take care of.

I can't help it... clearly  a case of nature vs. nurture. I'd love to have a green thumb. I'd also like to have the voice of an angel, the sparkle of a motivational speaker and the looks of a runway sensation.

On the plus side I don't have to eat like a rabbit, deal with the paparazzi, or find hanging space for platinum albums. I also don't have to spend time watering, pruning and transplanting.

Gratitude today for the time nature has spared me to do handle more important matters.

King and KJ baked some cupcakes after dinner..That's delightful. The domestic bliss part comes when the dishes get done!

Wednesday's Example of Domestic Bliss #3

Every weekday morning at 5:34 am I drag my kiester out of bed. When I tell people what time I get up they say "Why the heck do you get up that early?" (secretly I wonder "doesn't everybody?") I explain... I get up that early to get everyone else's day started. I brew the coffee and check my mail, I ensure clean underwear and matching socks are at the ready for E-man. I watch the clock to avert teenage sleep-in, which in turn insures they achieve maximum bathroom time and minimized AM stress (for EVERYONE!)

And I make lunches. 4 lunches...5 days a week for as long as people have been eating lunches in this house. Noboby is ever really happy with everything I pack. Most days I come home and find a refused banana, an undesired muffin, an apple or disdained juice box in the place where I lay out the lunches for packing.

I guess today I really missed the mark...a whole lunch left behind!  After checking to make sure Lula actually left the house today, I salvaged what wouldn't be harboring the threat of food born illness.

Thank you Lula for making ME lunch today...I hope you're enjoying your french fries!

Wednesday's Example of Domestic Bliss #2

Maybe you will look at this picture and think "is it International Chocolate Cake Day again?" Sorry to disappoint, that glorious observance only comes once a year.

What you see does however bring as much joy to my family as International Chocolate Cake Day. It's a finished cake The inside is vanilla and chocolate cake layered with creamy chocolate filling. It's a cake for a mentally challenged senior whose greatest joy are two yellow tennis balls. That is not what makes my family joyful.

Remember I said it was a finished cake? It's the finished part that they are grateful for. I love to make cakes, I love to decorate them. I am however a wee bit of a perfectionist and the very thing that I love to do also pops a spring in my head and I go a little bazerk.

Just ask them, they will all tell you there is nothing worse than the hours while I am working on a cake. They will also tell you there is no finer moment to be grateful for then when that finished cake hits a box!
